300

Project type

Site-specific installation

Year

2010

Location

Castello Alfonsino, Isola di Sant'Andrea (BR)

Technique

Black monochrome pinwheels on an iron base

The work “300” is a site-specific installation that spans the entire roof of the tower of Castello Anfonsino, covering an area of approximately 22.85 x 24.35 meters.
The work consists of 300 monochrome black pinwheels, each 50 cm in diameter. Each pinwheel is supported by an iron base, with dimensions equal to the pinwheel’s diameter (50x50 cm), and raised to a height of 1.5 meters by an 8-mm-diameter rod.
“300” is a title that first and foremost indicates the number of pinwheels, but at the same time echoes a famous battle of valiant soldiers.
For this reason, the arrangement of the black pinwheels will resemble that of a platoon in an attack or defense formation.
A “virtual grid” of squares will arrange the pinwheels at regular intervals of about one meter apart across the entire surface of the elliptical “square.”
The choice of the color black carries dual meanings and connotations: from the “mourning” aspect of war to the decision to strip this object (commonly used by children) of any playful, childish, or lighthearted associations.
They will give the wind a physical and sonic form, restoring the wind to the wind.
