"With her work Capasanta – exhibited during the *Sant’Elena, la seduzione nel segno* exhibition, a collateral event of the 2009 Venice Biennale – Gaia Scaramella decided to donate the printing plates that made up the *Ex-Vuoto* installation to Sant’Elena, as if they were genuine votive offerings. The work, specially designed for the space in which it was installed, consisted of a geodesic sphere which, suspended from a crane, rotated slowly on its own axis. Inside the sphere were zinc ex-votos which, over time, broke loose and fell into the watercourse below, returning the votive offering to the sea and to the saint. The journey of emancipation from the technique of engraving thus concludes with this final installation, in which Gaia chooses to detach herself symbolically and physically from her matrices, bestowing them upon another dimension."
