The work depicts the condition of women in the contemporary age. The ‘Saints’—as they are ironically termed—are all those women who find themselves caught between their enshrined rights and their socially inherited duties. The two sides rarely align; indeed, they often stand in a dichotomous and contradictory relationship. The work highlights the oversizing and disproportion between the material object commonly used by women and the woman who determines its use or is determined by it. The object is all the larger when the burden is more crushing, and all the smaller when the woman decides to distance herself from it, freeing herself from it. The vintage material, used specifically for this purpose, signifies that history—an apparently inescapable process—has come to a standstill for the woman. Forms change but substance remains. The utensil evolves technologically, yet the condition of its primary user, the woman, remains unchanged. The dolls are worn, broken and sad, bearing witness to the loneliness and deception of a woman who is still searching for her identity.
